About
Martin Ding is an Australian contemporary artist based in Sydney.
After more than two decades working in visual communication and design, he turned his focus to painting in 2023. His background in visual structure and composition continues to inform his artistic practice, while his paintings investigate weight as a visual language.
Working through the ongoing Three Weights series, Ding explores how the relationships between three independent forms generate tension, balance and movement. Rather than representing landscape or recognisable objects, the paintings are built around shifting relationships of mass, distance and spatial presence.
Rather than treating painting as an image, Ding approaches the canvas as a place where weight, space and force remain in continual negotiation. Blue is used not as a description of nature, but as a material presence that expands and activates the space surrounding concentrated forms.
His practice seeks a visual language in which painting is experienced as a physical and perceptual event, built through the dynamic relationship between weight, relation and gravity.
